I googled and found three different guesses on what the problem is but no one provided an update on how to fix this. This happens not during the actual install but during the the copying of the update file to system storage. When I go to update the FW to HFW_4.84.2 (renamed to PS3UPDAT.PUP in the PS3/UPDATE folder on my USB stick, I get error code 8002F997 or 8002f2c5 at 71%. I ran the minimum firmware check and confirmed I'm under 3.56 (minimum was 2.9). I updated the FW from 4.82 to 4.84 and followed MrMario2011's 4.84 guide on Youtube to jailbreak this system. I changed the HDD from the base 120GB to 1.5TB. If this is the case, you simply need to redownload the CFW file and try again. If its different from what psx-place says it should be for your HFW then it means its corrupted. If you have this problem, check your MD5 hash. RESOLVED: I had a corrupt HFW 4.84.2 file.
